About Our Products

What is Silk Route Heritage?

Silk Route Heritage is a curated collection of traditional and artisan-made products inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir, Pakistan and the historic Silk Route.

Our collection includes Kashmiri shawls, Pashmina shawls, Kani shawls, Kashmiri silk shawls, embroidered Kashmiri clothing, Kashmiri kurtis, Ralli bedcovers, Pakistani patchwork, Tharparkar textiles and Pakistani handicrafts.

Our aim is to celebrate traditional craftsmanship and help preserve the skills and cultural traditions of the artisans who create these beautiful pieces.

Are your products handmade?

Many of our products are handmade, hand-embroidered, handwoven or hand-stitched, depending on the individual piece.

Because traditional textiles are made by artisans rather than mass-produced, slight variations in colour, stitching, texture or pattern may occur. These natural variations are part of the character and individuality of a handmade product.

Are your Kashmiri shawls authentic?

Our collection is selected with an emphasis on traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship and heritage.

Individual products may differ in their materials, weaving, embroidery and construction.

What is the difference between a Pashmina shawl and a Kani shawl?

Pashmina refers to the fine natural fibre traditionally associated with Kashmir and the Himalayan region, while Kani refers to a distinctive Kashmiri weaving tradition known for intricate patterns.

Some pieces may combine different textile traditions or materials.

What is a Kani shawl?

A Kani shawl is associated with a traditional Kashmiri weaving technique known for its intricate patterns and detailed craftsmanship.

Our Kani collection includes Kani silk shawls and traditional Kani-inspired textiles selected for their distinctive designs and heritage character.

What makes Kashmiri shawls special?

Kashmiri shawls are celebrated for their beautiful textiles, intricate embroidery, distinctive patterns and long-standing cultural heritage.

Depending on the piece, craftsmanship may include Kani weaving, Kashmiri embroidery, handwork or traditional textile techniques.

What is Kashmiri embroidery?

Kashmiri embroidery is a traditional form of decorative textile work associated with Kashmir.

It can feature intricate motifs, borders and detailed patterns created on shawls, clothing and other textiles. Our collection includes embroidered Kashmiri shawls and hand-embroidered clothing.

What are Ralli quilts and Ralli bedcovers?

Ralli quilts and Ralli bedcovers are colourful patchwork textiles associated with the traditional textile heritage of Pakistan and surrounding regions.

They are made by combining fabrics, colours and patterns into distinctive patchwork designs. Each handmade piece can have its own individual character.

What are Tharparkar textiles?

Tharparkar textiles are traditional textiles associated with the Tharparkar region of Sindh, Pakistan.

Our collection celebrates the colourful patchwork, textile traditions and handmade craftsmanship associated with this region.

Product Care

How should I care for my Kashmiri shawl or Pashmina?

Care instructions vary according to the material and construction of each shawl.

We recommend following the care instructions provided on the individual product page. Some of our delicate Pashmina, silk and embroidered Kashmiri shawls may require specialist or dry cleaning.

Please do not assume that all shawls can be washed in the same way.

How should I care for my handmade textiles and Ralli bedcovers?

Handmade textiles require gentle care.

Because materials and construction vary between products, please follow the specific care instructions provided with your item or on its product page.

Some of our handmade patchwork and embroidered textiles may require dry cleaning or specialist care.

Are handmade products exactly the same as the photographs?

We make every effort to photograph and describe our products accurately.

However, handmade textiles may contain small variations in stitching, colour, pattern and texture. These variations are a natural characteristic of artisan-made products and are part of what makes each piece unique.

Our Heritage & Artisans

Where do your products come from?

Our collection includes products inspired by the textile and craft traditions of Kashmir, Pakistan and different regions of South Asia.

Depending on the product, pieces may be made by Kashmiri artisans, Pakistani artisans or artisans from specific regional craft communities.

Do you support local artisans?

Supporting and celebrating artisan craftsmanship is central to the purpose of Silk Route Heritage.

We believe that creating awareness and demand for traditional handmade products can help keep valuable craft skills, textile traditions and cultural knowledge alive.

Why are some handmade products imperfect?

Handmade products are not always perfectly uniform.

Small variations in stitching, embroidery, patchwork, colour or texture can occur because these pieces are created by human hands rather than produced through identical factory processes.

We see these characteristics as part of the story and individuality of traditional craftsmanship.

Are your products mass-produced?

Our collection focuses on handmade, handcrafted and artisan-made heritage products rather than ordinary mass-produced goods.

However, construction methods vary between products.
